Day Look Moodboard

For my Day Look design I was inspired by the Tom Ford catwalk look. As it is a day look I thought the eye makeup should be a more earthy tone but still have the Tom Ford style with the smokey eye. I thought a peachy pink tone with black eyeliner blended into it would be a good choice because it will make the eye makeup intense but not overdone. For the lips I thought I'd stick to a nude shade and used Maybelline's 'Honey Beige' shade. It's slightly darker than the shade on Daphne's lips but will match more to the eye makeup. For the skin I just want to apply a slight contour to the face and no blush so that the look is not over done and still looks like day makeup. The eye makeup is the key feature to the Tom Ford catwalk look so although heavy eye makeup isn't ideal for a day look, I think I should still apply colour on the eyes so that it fits in with the Tom Ford brand. For the hairstyle I don't think it should be too different from the original and still have that rock chick look. I've chosen long wavy hair with a bit of volume to it to keep it looking untamed.

Spring/Summer Trend Colours

To create my Spring/Summer Look I want to create a grungey smokey eye using 2 colour swatches of the Spring/Summer 2015 colour palette. As Tom Ford hasn't used any pastels in his collection/style/look I'm going to use two shades from the darker section of the palette. Spring reminds me of greens, pinks, and blues but I think for this look I would choose the turquoise (1st swatch on 5th row) for the eyeshadow and then apply purple (4th swatch on 6th row) onto the eyelashes.

Key Words of the SS 15 Style

I thought it would be a good idea to gather the key words of what the general style and look of the S/S 2015 collection is like so that I can start to get a clearer idea of what the design of my 5 shoots look like. I also think this will help me stay focused on what I should be aiming for:
  • Dark Leathers
  • Grunge
  • Rock-Chic
  • Messy Hair
  • Dark Tones
  • Smokey Eye
  • Metallics
  • Note that to create the smokey eye 3 different shades were used to create it.

Tom Ford Autumn/Winter 2015 Collection

Campain Advertisement of the A/W 2014 Collection

The A/W 2015 Collection was inspired by Tom Ford's life. His life in London is symbolised through the black 'forever' garment pieces. The cowboy boots complete the look to also represent his American Western life. A 60's spin has also been put on the collection as the models walk down the runway in shift style dresses. When the campaign advertisement above was made they matched the outfits that fitted with each woman's individual style and how they would work it. The main piece of the collection is the football jersey style sequin shift dresses as they have Tom Ford's name written across it along with his date of birth '61' on it too. I think this is the main piece because to me it is the most memorable and also has been by Beyonce. Jay-z sang the 'Tom Ford' song while rocking a similar shirt like this.

Packaging and Presentation

It is clear that colours of Tom Ford's makeup collections consist of a black casing and gold writing encrypted and gold detail completing the elegant and expensive looking design. The black design on the packaging and products is no ordinary black for when light is shone on it from different angles, it shows all different shades of black. Each boxed up makeup product is finished with a plastic covering which isn't a common idea designers use to present their products but Tom Ford has chosen this packaging idea so that his products all look as brand new and untouchable as possible for when the client receives it.

Even his brush set consists of black and gold handles to keep to the colour theme along with a black case with a gold zip to keep the brushes in.
For special/limited edition collections, Tom Ford has designed the products by keeping the golden outlines and writing but replaced the black with white.
The Tom Ford counters definitely look as expensive as their products are. The layout is very spacious and organised as the makeup products on display are all set up on boards with big spaces between each one with lipsticks lined up and then foundations lined up underneath. The counter also has some of their makeup packages presented in a glass showcase which sets the mood of Tom Ford Makeup being luxurious and exclusive.

Makeup and Hair Inspiration of the S/S 2015 Catwalk Look

Daphne Groeneveld

The models' looks to match the collection is called 'The Polished Rock Chick'. Charlotte Tilbury helped Tom Ford design the makeup look while Sam McKnight created the hair backstage. The look was inspired by rock singer Chrissie Hynde of the band The Pretenders. A major trend of the makeup look this season is natural but I guess Ford just couldn't resist adding something extra to his models. But I don't disagree as I love a smokey eye! Tilbury concealed any flaws so that the look could be perfect and natural at the same time. The smokey eye is of a metallic black shade which has been applied on the eyelid and  blended outwards to make it look smoulder. She also applied MAC eyeliner along the lash and water lines and then blended it into the eyeshadow. The eyeshadow was also blended underneath the eye. A nude lipstick of Tom Fords, Vanilla Suede, was applied to the lips to give a full natural looking pout and was also applied to the cheek bones for a polished sheen look. Sam McKnight created the hair style by placing a wig on each model, matching their natural hair colour and then chopped the hair to a shorter length and gave it a messy finish to define the whole rock chick look.

How Did Tom Ford Become Successful?

Tom Ford was born in 1961 in Austin, Texas. In 1979 he moved to New York to study a History in Art Degree at New York University. While studying in New York, he learnt what the fashion industry had to offer for him. Ford decided to drop out of University and moved to California to have become an actor. He saved money through acting in advertisements and went to Parson''s School of Design to study Architecture but changed to a fashion course swiftly joining the school. Ford was employed by Cathy Hardwick, a fashion designer, upon his graduation from Parson's. In 1988 he was offered a job as design director at Perry Ellis (helmed by Marc Jacobs at the time). His career with Gucci began in 1990 and he moved to Italy. In 1994 he took Dawn Mello's role as creative director for Gucci and made the brand the most successful it had been in a long time and by 1994 Gucci was worth $4.3 billion which made it one of the largest and most luxurious brands worldwide. Gucci Group brought Yves Saint Laurent under his instruction and he became the creative and communications director of the brand alongside his position at Gucci.

Strong and powerful women is the main theme of this collection. Tom Ford's strong women inspiration was associated with models of the 70s and late 80s and even women such as Elle Macpherson. The inspiration of the clothing line is for it to be for a women who will walk around in restricted garments and dresses that will outshine anyone else in the room. I do think the collection shows a lot of strength and power for the women that will wear them. Even the models wearing them pulled off this power with their muscular legs and strong bone structure.

                                    Poloroid Collection                                     Oscar Party

Tom Ford started off his inspiration for the S/S 2015 Collection when he watched 'Mati Hari', a 1931 film about the exotic dancer and the accusations of her being a spy for the germans during World War I. His focus of course was the clothes Greta Garbo wore as Mati Hari in the film. She is dressed head to toe in beautifully detailed garments which were designed by one of the most iconic designers of the 30's, Adrian. Ford also took inspiration of course from images of the real Mati Hari and her outfits are just as amazing as the film!
The collection is also inspired by Tom Ford's old works from the 90's when he was the Creative Director of Gucci. The Gucci S/S 1996 Collection involved many black and white clothing and a splash of colour to the runway. The fabrics are sheer and metallic and there are also a few sheer and low cut garments in the collection. The hairstyles are dishevelled looking along with a blue smoky eye.
Films by Rainer Werner Fassbinder were also an inspiration to the clothing line. Fassbinder was a director and his films were made from 1969-1982 when he died of a drug overdose. His films were made to be provoking and disturbing with plenty of controversy.
Ford has always used women as part of his inspiration for his collections and for this season, the opening scene of the 1965 film 'The Tenth Victim' plays a part. In the scene Ursula Andress, the beautiful actress is wearing silver, metallic texturised underwear but the main inspiration is Andress' breasts as they are actually a weapon shooting pistols like guns.
Carlo Mollino, a designer and arcitect has been a long time inspiration and fascination to Tom Ford. Mollino's 'Polaroids' exhibition was a collection of polaroids consisting a combination of Surrealism, Futurism, Art Nouveau, ancient mythology and the female form.
Lisa Esner's style is also an inspiration of the S/S 2015 Collection. Lisa Eisner is a fashion editor at Vogue and Mademoiselle as well as frequent contributor to other magazine companys such as Vanity Fair and Harper's Bazaar. Her wardrobe consists of bright, lively colours, patterns and textures.
The collection has dresses that cover very little of the breast area which is inspired by contemporary fashion through young women such as Miley Cyrus and Rihanna who have the bodies to pull it off.

TOM FORD Autumn/Winter 2013 Womenswear

Campaign Ad for Tom For A/W 2013 Collection

'Cross Cultural Multi Ethnic' is the theme of the Tom Ford A/W 2013 Collection which involved all different patterns and materials of culture being thrown together to create this fun, vibrant and colourful collection of womenswear. The clothing involves animal prints such as leopard and zebra, glittery black lace, fringes, fur, Chinese floral prints, sequin embroidered flower patterned boots and pop art prints. This collection was the first of Tom Ford's to be presented in a public fashion show since he started his womenswear collections which was shown in London. I think this collection shows how diverse Tom Ford can be because the vibrancy of this collection is different to the other collections I have seen from him which are always portrayed as sexy. But this collection brings more than sexuality because of there is such a variety of colour, texture and prints brought into it making it the most creative and funky designs I have seen of Tom Ford.

The main theme revolving the Spring/Summer 2013 Women's collection by Tom Ford was the idea chastity and perversity in women's clothing and how people perceive a woman in them and if they look conservative or sexy. The collection is about finding the balance between these two. The collection was also inspired by futuristic themes and the time of space exploration. The makeup was influenced by an aggressive vamp edge resulting in smokey eyes and the hair was styled into teased beehives inspired by the 60s looks. As part of the futuristic theme the materials of the collection were of metallic and patente leather along with these unusual heels in the image above which I love for the uniqueness of the needles coming out of the wedge heel.
After looking through the collection I completely understand the concept of the theme matching the clothes because he has used materials that are known to look sexy such as leather and then created an outfit using this material that is a conservative style. Or he has created a dress that seems conservative with an open back making it also sexy.
